Jokes and jokes and jokes

Hey Everyone!

It has been an extremely exciting and awesome few months of shows, and I couldn't be happier with all the performances. CCCP has now brought down Hannibal Buress, Todd Barry, Dave Hill, Sean Green, Eddie Pepitone, Seth Herzog, Neal Brennan, the awesome, young and talented Joe Mande and Dan St. Germain, and we're just getting warmed up.

It has been a pleasure bringing these comedians to Philly, and I'm going to do all I can to keep it interesting for everyone. A couple of things are in the works now that it's too soon to discuss, but it looks like fall is going to be seriously funny. All I'll say right now is this: Fringe and Popped.

Stay tuned, we got more stuff coming.

Love and Handys,

Corey

Philly Weekly catches up with The Zog!

Q&A with Seth “The Zog” Herzog
by Sean McManus
A venerable, go-to comedy cult hero scene stealer on 30 Rock, Chappelle's Show, Role Models and many a Late Night with Jimmy Fallon sketch (where he also warms up the audience), Seth “The Zog” Herzog will whip you in a laugh-out-loud frenzy. The powerhouse host and producer behind one of the longest-running, most popular standup shows in New York, “Sweet,” brings his witty brand of stream-of-consciousness absurdities to Connie’s Ric Rac this week. PW caught up with the legend in the making about his daily routine, what he’d say to alien life forms if given the opportunity, and his cheesesteak obsession.

Seth "THE ZOG" Herzog hits Philly May 21st!

Seth Herzog (aka "The Zog") is a very popular New York comedian and actor. Lately, he's been getting a lot of buzz for his reoccurring characters on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (ie: "Captain Zog," "The Dude Spooner," and often dancing in underwear and suspenders). You may know him from his many years as a pop culture pundit on VH1's "Best Week Ever" and many other "40 Greatest..." shows, or from his scene stealing roles in such films, as "Role Models," "Prime," "The Baxter," "The Ten," "Safe Men," or "In the Weeds." He's also had a few good turns on the small screen with roles on Comedy Central's "Chappelle Show" & "Stella," CBS' "Love Monkey," & E!'s "Number 1 Single." He was recently noted in Heeb Magazine's "Heeb 100," a listing of 100 influential young Jewish artists/performers.

In the New York comedy scene, Seth is a much respected and longtime denizen of the NY's downtown alt scene. He often performs in such venues as The Slipper Room, UCB, Rififi, Fez as well as being a fixture at clubs like Caroline's and Comix too. In addition, Seth produces and hosts a weekly comedy show every Tuesday night called "Sweet" on the Lower East Side at bar called Ella. A regular feature of the show is a ten-minute set called "What's On My Mom's Mind," during which he interviews his mother.

Besides being an active performer, Seth was the subject of the short documenary film called, "Zog's Place." Detailing his life in his former NY apartment that was 115 square ft.

Seth is perhaps best known for his "Wonder Woman" routine, during which he wears a Wonder Woman costume and does a dance while lip-synching to the Wonder Woman theme song.
In April 2008, Seth toured Kuwait performing for the U.S. troops.

Also, if you're in NY and you can see Seth as the audience warm-up comedian for "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" as well.

Seth is bringing his unique brand of comedy to Philly, and you can only see it at Connie's Ric Rac!

Tickets are $10 in advance, and $12 at the door, so get yours today!

Joe Mande is coming to some standup for you, Philadelphia! Yes, you!

Brown Paper Tickets Feature on Their Blog!

An Interview with Corey Cohen of Corey Cohen Comedy Productions

February 23, 2011 2:08 PM

Philadelphia's independent comedy producer Corey Cohen has been putting together some incredible bills at Connie's Ric Rac in South Philly and we caught up with him to chat a little about life as an independent comedy producer.

We love to see independent producers land big names for their events and Corey is bringing some incredible talent to Philly. If you're in the area, get out there to Connie's and experience stand-up at it's best.

Tell me a little bit about you and what you do?

Well I've always loved comedy, and I've been performing as an improv and sketch comedian for years. Recently I began booking shows with national comics that I really love but rarely get to see in Philly. That basic idea is what is driving me to do these shows. I think going to see live comedy is something most people love, and they want to do, but they don't always have many options. All I want is to do as producer is give people the ability to see the coolest and smartest comedians working right now.

How did you get involved with producing comedy in Philadelphia?

I've been doing comedy in Philly since I was a teenager, when I started out with improv. Improv led to sketch comedy, but both allowed me to perform around the country and get more deeply involved in the industry. Over the years the comedy scene has really grown, both locally and nationally, and this town is certainly a reflection of that. But there was a gap here, nobody was regularly tracking down and bringing in specific comics, trying to match them to their crowds. I have connections to some comics, decided to push the idea along, and so far it's been a great success.

I'd imagine you have some pretty crazy stories about working with comedians, care to share one with us?

You know, comedians are crazy in a different way than say, musicians. A crazy musician drinks himself blind, does a bunch of drugs, gets onstage and jumps and screams. A crazy comedian stands backstage quietly, his hands over his face, reciting his bit. Maybe he asks that nobody look at him an hour before the show, maybe he needs water at a certain temperature, stuff like that. In that sense, I have lots of crazy stories about comedians, and they all tend to revolve around some sort of anxiety disorder, so maybe I should make something up.

I once saw Todd Barry punch a guy in the throat for looking at him funny.

You have some great comedians coming up. Do you mind saying a little something about each of them?

Dave Hill is very well mannered, wears spiffy suits, and does brilliant and genuinely absurd stand up. Really excited to have him headline a show here, last time I saw him he had an audience raptly watching him drink soda in between jokes. That's talent. I mean he made the soda look SO good. Tickets

Chris Valenti is a comedian/musician/songwriter, and apparently a very avid multitasker. He'll be doing music and comedy for the broken hearted, the emotionally wounded, and the romantically stricken. If it has to do with love and loss, he'll make you laugh about it. Tickets

Sean Green is a Philly native and is very popular in L.A. and on the radio. If L.A. is anything like I remember it, then Sean's popularity on the radio is either because of his talent, or because he gets the best drugs. I'm hoping it's talent, but I figure the show will be a success either way. Tickets

Eddie Pepitone is from Brooklyn but lives in L.A., which means he's miserable. He's also hysterically funny and has a way of getting down to the meat of things that I really enjoy. I actually booked Eddie because I was watching a Flight Of The Conchords episode on DVD that he was in, and his part was so funny that I had to look him up. Then I realized I had seen him in a million things, and that he was available to book. Plus I figured being from L.A. he also has awesome, awesome drugs. Tickets

What do you like best about working with Brown Paper Tickets?

You guys have just always been wonderful to deal with. Anytime I've ever had a problem, you all helped sort it out immediately. Your customer service is fantastic, which is absolutely necessary when you have shows coming together and something, anything, really, goes wrong. I know I always have the support of BPT, which puts me at ease and let's me focus on the eight million other things you need to do when producing a show.

If you could book your dream comedy line-up who would it be and why?

My dream lineup only has one guy on it, and it's because of a long standing desire to see him perform again. I'm talking about Dave Chappelle. He's not completely retired, I know he still pops up from time to time, but nothing would make me happier than to put him on stage in Philly. I'd be honored. After that I would probably walk into the ocean at sunset, because I'd have done everything I needed to do.

Do you have any advice for our comedy producers out there?

Don't be afraid to go after the best people out there, and don't let anyone discourage you. Also, know funny comedians.

Matt McCarthy is coming to Philly! Yay!

Described by The New York Times as a "John Belushi-like madman" McCarthy is commonly known for having red hair and a beard. You may recognize him from his myriad TV appearances, notably as The Cable Guy in those Verizon FiOs commercials.

McCarthy hosts Action Pack Wednesday nights on AMC with Nick Stevens, and has performed standup comedy at Just for Laughs and on television on Season 3 of Live at Gotham and John Oliver's New York Stand Up Show' on Comedy Central.

Matt writes and performs for Front Page Films with Pete Holmes and Oren Brimer, where he has made videos for CollegeHumor and Comedy Central. Their HOTEL series was also featured on Atom.com.

McCarthy will appear in IFC's The Whitest Kids U' Know and with fellow comedian Robert Kelly in the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO.

Now you can catch him LIVE at Connie's Ric Rac in South Philadelphia, where you can marvel at the redness of his beard in person!

Holy Shit, it's Eddie Pepitone!

Don't miss the chance to check out the thoroughly entertaining and equally agitated Eddie Pepitone perform a night of stand-up comedy!

Here's Eddie summed up in his own words:

"Eddie Pepitone is a bad ass that works on television regularly. Eddie is Jackie Gleason crossed with the Dali Lama crossed with Don Rickles crossed with your mother.

Eddie came to Los Angeles working alongside Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn in Old School. While those gentelmen have gone on to wild-ass fame and fortune Eddie works diligently and far more funnier (because he is hungrier) than those sellouts.

Eddie is a recurring character on The Sarah Silverman show as Eddie the chef at Romanski's. Eddie is on Monk this season, Monk's final season. Eddie has been on Flight of the Concords (Season 1), It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, ER, Malcolm in the Middle, King of Queens and that horrible abortion of a show Last Comic Standing. Eddie is on this season's The Life and Times of Tim on HBO and performs all over Los Angeles and New York when he is in town!
"

And now Eddie is coming to Philly to make you laugh! Show him this town knows what'd funny, and check him out at Connie's on March 25th!

CRITICAL MASS - LOL WITH IT: Q&A with local comedy booker Corey Cohen

Friday, January 21st, 2011 at 12:00 pm
posted by Ryan Carey

On Sat., Jan. 22, Philly’s hardest working independent comedy booker, Corey Cohen, brings SNL and 30 Rock writer Hannibal Buress to Connie’s Ric Rac (1132 South Ninth St.). Today, he takes time out fof his busy schedule to chat with Ryan about his up-and-coming booking company.

Critical Mass: How long have you been doing Corey Cohen Comedy Productions?

Corey Cohen: I’ve been doing CCCP for nearly a year now, as far as being completely focused on booking standup comics is concerned. Prior to that I was in a sketch group called “The Sixth Borough,” and during that time I also ran a monthly comedy variety show called Steal This Show. So I’ve been producing comedy shows for a few years now, but CCCP is really a proper attempt at bringing the best comedy I can, standup or otherwise, to Philadelphia.

CM: Are all your shows at the Ric Rac?

CC: As of right now, yes, though my hope is to expand into the future. But I have a strong loyalty to the Ric Rac. I’ve been working with them for years, since it was just a shell of what it is now, and I have a great deal of love and affection for those guys. Plus I think that Connie’s is an awesome venue, perfectly built for comedy. Frank and Joe Tartaglia–the brothers who co-run the joint–are probably some of the funniest people I know. Watching them interact is a show in and of itself. I think their ongoing support, coupled with the Ric Rac being an awesome black box venue in South Philly, make’s Connie’s a pretty ideal place for these shows.

CM: Does being a booker have any implications on being a comic? (i.e. more stage time?)

CC: It’s hard to say. Since I’ve ramped up the production side of things, I haven’t been performing as much. My original thought was that doing these shows would parlay into being in some of them, but the truth is I’m really enjoying putting the shows together right now, and that’s enough for me. Plus, I have other comedy writing projects I’m working on that I would also like to use CCCP to produce and promote. Being someone who does comedy, the biggest advantage is already being very familiar with the local comedy scene, and being able to support it and expand it. Philly is an increasingly young town that is long overdue for a comedy revival. People want to laugh, and I’m happy as long as I’m helping to make it happen.

Corey is always interested to know which comedians people want to see in Philly, so visit him at Corey Cohen Comedy Productions. And stop back by Critical Mass at 2 p.m. for Ryan’s interview with Connie’s Ric Rac manager Frank Tartaglia about all the funny business that’s been going on there lately.
